Obituary of John Neilson

John C. Neilson, a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away on January 9, 2022. John was born on January 24, 1939 in New York City. He was the son of Robert F. and Gloria Morales Neilson.

Everyone knew John as Jack, he could fix anything and would help anyone who needed something to repair. He built our home and lived in it for 44 years until we had to downsize.

Jack met the love of his life Fran who worked in the Planters Peanut Store on Main Street in Poughkeepsie, NY. 2 years later we were married on June 8, 1958 and have been married for 63 years. Jack, I will always love you.

Jack loved to play the guitar. He played in many bands called Syncopation, The Sundowners, The Country Men and The Goodtimes. He had a great singing voice and enjoyed playing at weddings, the Moose club and other venues. Jack was also a volunteer fireman for Roosevelt Engine 2 for 10 years.

Jack retired from Hudson River Psychiatric Center after 35 1/2 years. After retirement, he watched Bob Ross the painter on TV.  Jack never painted pictures before that. After watching the shows, he painted beautiful paintings for us and for other family members. 

Jack loved his wife, children and family.  He is survived by his wife Frances (Fran) DeMichael Neilson, daughter Michele Dyman and son-in-law Dave Dyman, son John Neilson, Jr, son-in-law Doug Blauvelt, grandsons Jason and wife Sarah Neilson, Josh Blauvelt and partner Tyler, Patrick Blauvelt, great grandson Benjamin Neilson and special niece Jeannette, nephews David Lea and T.R. Lea.

Jack is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Gloria Neilson, his brother Robert Neilson, Jr., sister Amanda Lea, niece Lisa Neilson, special nephew Frank Bowman and his daughter Lorraine Blauvelt. Jack never got over losing his Lorraine who he will now see in heaven.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022 from 11:30am to 1:30pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc. 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603 with a Funeral Service following Visitation at 1:30pm. Burial is at St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY
