Obituary of Shirley A. Atkins

Shirley A. Atkins, 78, of Poughkeepsie, NY, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 25, 2022. Shirley was born on June 1, 1943 in Poughkeepsie, NY to the late James Postel, Sr. and Ethel Twyman. She was a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie, NY and attended Poughkeepsie High School. She was employed at the Hudson River Psychiatric Center for over 30 years until her retirement. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family members and countless friends.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Kishana Phoenix-Charles and her husband Gary Charles, her sons Kevin Sprow, John Brooks, Brian Atkins and his wife Cynthia Atkins; Corey Whitaker of Albany, NY; a sister Sandra Postel, all of Poughkeepsie, NY; a brother Phillip Postel and his wife Maryanne Postel of Randolph, MA, her cousins Stephen, Larry, Garry Tissiera and Karen Hawkins; her grandchildren Jibri, Nazahe, Christian, Jamek, Josiah, Gavin, Kendrea, Marika, Tamara, Kyreef, Kavesha, Jahzir, Saraj and Barrington; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Lifelong companion and friend James Butler also survive Shirley and she is predeceased by husband John "Hank" Atkins (mutually separated).

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 from 10:00am to 11:11am at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc. 71 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
