My Dear Cousins, I am deeply saddened by the loss of your mom. What I remember about her most was her optimistic outlook on life and her pleasant way- always with that little smile on her face; She was patient and gentle in her way. I remember as a small child she patiently thought me how to use a steak knife. She encouraged me all the way while smiling all the time! My dad often had told me I remind him of your mom- what a compliment!
I know she is in peacenow and she is with Your Dad,her mom and Grandpop as well as Uncle Carl and my Dad. I believe she was a light in this life-

My deepest condolences to the Whitley family. My memories of Aunt Joanie are fond. She had a sunny disposition, always kind. I have always appreciated that the most. Joan was the last of her generation—and the first generation of Valent’s in this country. An important era in our family has passed.
She loved both of her brothers, Carl and Larry (my father). The last time I saw her was at my fathers funeral (April 2007). The day before we had a Nor’easter, which left many roads impassable. This caused Joanie and her family to arrive late. Joanie was very upset and I felt so sad for her and my father.
She was kind and humble. She will be missed!

Our Arlington High School English Department is saddened to learn of Joan / Joanie / Grandma Joan's passing. We hope that her family is comforted to know that we are all better for having known Joan. Her celebrations over our joys were infectious. Talking to Joan was sweetness, light, and a little bit of good gossip in the mix. In difficult times, many years ago, Joan was always there to offer sage advice to all of the young teachers like me. Joan held my babies when I brought them to school, and then many years later rejoiced with me over their high school and college graduations. English Department Christmas parties meant we all brought photos of our children to show Grandma Joan. Once when showing Joan my children's photos, she lovingly asked, "Are these my copies?" "Of course," I replied. That was Joan to all of us: a loving matriarch. Thank you Joan for your care, dedication, and love. We loved you too. Until we meet again, lovely lady. Rest in peace.
