Obituary of Jan O. Johansson

Dr. Jan O. Johansson, 77, of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away on July 18, 2022 at home with his loving family. He was born on November 3, 1944, in Ljunby, Sweden to the late Siegfried and the late Elsa (Nilsson) Johansson.  Jan was a local resident of Poughkeepsie for over 30 years. He was a revered physician for the Rehabilitation Unit of Saint Francis Hospital and later for Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, for 32 years, before retiring on 03/27/2022.

Jan loved education and held many degrees including those in literature, language, physics, mathematics, engineering, and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley. He earned his medical degree from the Karolinska Institutet located in Solna, Sweden within the urban area of Stockholm. Dr. Johansson completed his residency at Albert Einstein Hospital in the Bronx, NY.  He loved all kinds of music, opera, art, and enjoyed nature. He was an avid follower of politics and had an informed interest in history and economics.

While Jan’s career as a physician gave him much satisfaction, it was his role as a husband, father , brother, and uncle that truly defined who he was. Jan was the beloved husband of Susan J. Buckner. They were married on September 17, 1995, in Las Vegas Nevada. Survivors include spouse Susan Johansson of Poughkeepsie New York, cherished daughter Erika C. Johansson of Poughkeepsie New York, brother Boosa Johansson of Sweden, brother Bengt Johansson of Sweden and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY.
