Obituary of John J. Markett
John J. Markett Jr. passed away at the age of 82 on Saturday, October 22, 2022 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family and caregivers including his wife of 56 years, Mary B. Markett. John was born in Kingston, NY, the son of Agatha and John Markett and lived his whole married life in Poughkeepsie, NY. During his last years he was lovingly cared for with the help of his health aides, Kara Lawes and Peter Barnes, his Hospice nurse Julie Eads, and his Hospice music therapist Elisa Parker.
As a gifted teacher and a musician, John touched the lives of many over 60 years. He taught Social Studies for 30 years at Arlington High School and retired from teaching in 2000. John was an avid reader and gardener and spent his summers happily working at Volino’s Nursery in Poughkeepsie. He enjoyed these hobbies and time with his family and his grandchildren during his retirement. In addition to singing with church choirs at the Church of the Holy Trinity and St. Martin de Porres Church in Poughkeepsie, he was also a member of other choral groups including Capella Festiva and the IBM chorus. He is survived by his sister Patricia and was predeceased by his brother Daniel and his parents John and Agatha Markett.
John leaves behind his beloved family, Mary, his wife and his four children: Michael Markett and his wife Kelly of Bow, NH, Eileen Lomoriello and her husband Gene of Verbank, NY, Brendan Markett and his wife Julie of North Stonington, CT and Kevin Markett and his wife Jennifer of Poughkeepsie, NY. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Owen and Emmaline Markett, Ava and Maeve Lomoriello, Benjamin, Lydia, and Joseph Markett and Cameron and Grady Markett.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday October 26th from 4:00 to 7:00pm at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home located at 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, October 27th at 9:30am at St. Martin de Porres Church in Poughkeepsie followed by burial at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s name to Hudson Valley Hospice in Poughkeepsie, NY.
