Dear Diane and family, I am so very sorry for your lost. Bob was a great mentor, colleague and a friend. I will always remember and appreciate how kind and friendly he was towards the new hires. He made reading manuals more bearable during the early days. Not to mention the fact that Bob had all the answers for work and life. I can still see him standing by the office door with one arm leaning on the door frame, reading glass rest below the bridge of his nose, and a warm smile. Dear Diane and Family, My heart goes out to you at this most difficult time. I'm so sad to hear of Bob's long suffering and for his loss. He was truly one of the nicest and gentlest men I ever met. He had a big influence on me and my career as I 'grew up' working with Bob at IBM from 1981-1989 and I thought of him often all the years since. He truly was someone who enjoyed life and I do remember the love and pride he had for his family and his passion for skiing. He organized Ski Tuesday's when lift tickets in the area were $2. His patience was evident in his work and especially when we pulled childish office pranks on him. At 21 years old, I had no thought of retirement but he encouraged me to set up a 401K as soon as it was available to me and when I said I had no idea what to do - he jumped in and set it up for me. I never changed it until a few weeks ago when I started seriously considering the thought of retirement. I truly owe Bob a debt of gratitude and for all he did for me. I am sorry and saddened to hear of Bob's passing. We were co-workers at IBM for several years where he was a mentor and friend to myself and many others. Outside of work, I had the opportunity to join Bob (i.e. try to keep up with him) on various outdoor adventures - hiking in the Catskills, skiing trips to local slopes and beyond (Vermont, Gore Mtn), sailing and boating on the Hudson, canoeing and rafting on the Delaware River, just to name a few. I can attest to his 'affinity for the outdoors and water sports'. Although I never had a chance to see them in use, the vintage jumping skis and associated stories were always interesting. Speaking for myself and I'm sure many others, Bob will be missed. My condolences to the Hlavaty family. Regards, Charles Mari
