Obituary of Barbara Joan Walsh

Barbara Joan Walsh (Setaro) 85, a resident of Poughkeepsie, NY departed her earthly life on April 8, 2023, at her home peacefully surrounded by family, after an extended illness. 

She was born on April 27, 1937, in Millbrook, New York, the youngest of four children to Adeline and Andrew Setaro. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her siblings, Carol Scarperi, Jean Kimlin, and Andrew Setaro Jr. 

On April 4, 1959, Barbara married Charles Donald Walsh, who survives. In addition to her loving husband of 64 years, Barbara is survived by her six daughters, Kathleen (Brad) Goulden (Gardiner, NY) Marianne Schoman,(Clinton Corners, NY)  Barbara Walsh, (Granger, Indiana) Eileen Walsh, (Round Top, NY)  Margaret Kistner, and Jean Walsh (Poughkeepsie, NY)

13 Grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. 

Barbara graduated from Vassar Brothers Hospital School of Nursing in 1958.  She worked her entire career for Saint Francis Hospital.  She was a devoted nurse, wife, mother, friend, and homemaker. She was an excellent cook, seamstress, and expert knitter. She also was a voracious reader, always looking to share uplifting books with family and friends. 

Barbara was a devout Catholic. The words that come to mind when one thinks of her are Faithful, nurturing, caring, and selflessness [always giving]. From the time her first daughter was born to the time her sixth daughter went to college, she was always there for her children, supporting, and providing unconditional love. And, she transitioned this love to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the loving caregivers that have tended to Barbara over these past few years, providing steadfast comfort and companionship through her illness. They are truly angels on earth. They would also like to thank Hudson Valley Hospice for their support in the last weeks of her life.  

Her life will be celebrated by visiting hours at the Doyle Funeral home on Wednesday, April 12, 5:00-7:00 pm following with a Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Thursday, April 13 at 12:00 P.M. Graveside services and the burial will follow at St. Peters Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY.
