Obituary of Edna Houghtaling

Edna Houghtaling died suddenly on June 13, 2023, at Vassar Brothers Hospital.  

She was born in Poughkeepsie, NY, on January 26, 1930, the daughter of Edward and Julia [Hosier] Rogers. She was a graduate of F.D. Roosevelt High School class of ‘48. She worked for New York Telephone Company for 25 years as a telephone operator. 

Edna was a wonderful mother, supportive and devoted to her three children, Barbara Bahl, Stanley “Si” Sinon Jr. (Mary Vallo, daughter Ashley), and Joann Shortz (Lenny). She leaves behind her four adoring grandchildren, Kara Sinon (Elliott Seamark), Deidra Thomas (Jason), Tyler Bahl (Jessica), and Kyle Bahl (Alexandra Dwy), who will always remember her for her sense of humor, her patience, and the love she showered upon them.

Her great-grandchildren, Callan, Maeve, & Landry Thomas, and Judah & Mackenzie Bahl will always remember their great-grandmother for her kindness towards them, such as the chocolate treats, she always had available each time they visited.

Her beloved nieces and nephews remember her for her poise, grace, and loving nature.

She was predeceased by her husband Donald Houghtaling, her beloved grandson Sean Sinon, and her son-in-law Miles "Mike" Bahl.  

Edna lived life with a happy heart and a playful spirit. She could be ready on a moment's notice for a trip to a casino or a dinner out with her sisters-in-law, Joan Sinon and Joyce Bernasconi, whom she shared over 60 years of good times with. Edna made lifelong friends with neighbors, both at home in Poughkeepsie, while living in Pleasant Valley, and during winter stays in Florida. Her home was always decorated for every holiday, and she went out of her way to make Christmas and birthdays extra special. She certainly will be remembered fondly for living her life to the fullest, her smile, her generosity, and the love she shared with those around her.

Graveside Services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at St. Peter’s Cemetery Salt Point Turnpike Poughkeepsie, New York 12603.
