Obituary of Irene M. Papadopoulos

Irene M. Papadopoulos, 88, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away peacefully on June 15, 2023. She was born on June 28, 1934, in Hartford, CT to the late George and Sophia Mermigos.

She was co-owner of the family produce business and was the heart and soul of the operations.

On September 13, 1957, at St. George’s Church in Hartford CT, Irene married John N. Papadopoulos of Andros Greece.

Irene has been a local resident since 1997, previously from Yonkers and Spring Valley NY, and Hartford CT.

She was a long-time member of the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church in Poughkeepsie. Irene loved to paint and crochet.  She would repay even the smallest act of kindness shown toward her with one of her colorful, hand-made Afghans or paintings.  Visits by her many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews brought joy to her life.  Her wisdom, advice, and support will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Nicholas J. and Joanne Papadopoulos of Houston Texas, daughter and son-in-law Mary J. and Konstantinos Bozas of Poughkeepsie New York, and son and daughter-in-law Gregory J. and Francesca Papadopoulos of New Rochelle New York. She is also survived by grandchildren; Mary S. Papadopoulos, Irene Ziotas, husband Christopher, Kiriaki Pertesis, husband Michael, Demitria J. Bozas, partner Branwyn, John G. Papadopoulos, Matthew G. Papadopoulos, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Irene was pre-deceased by her three brothers and sister William Mermigos, Theodore Mermigos, James Mermigos, and Mary Contos.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church, 140 South Grand Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY, Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 AM.

Burial will be at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, New York 12601
