Obituary of Mayshell Tucker
Mayshell Singleton Tucker 63, passed away on June 1, 2024, with her loving family by her side. Mayshell was born on May 23,
1961, in Poughkeepsie NY, to Leola Singleton and Vincent Wood. Mayshell had the distinction of being the first grandchild in
the Wood family. Mayshell received her primary education in the Poughkeepsie City School District. Mayshell pursued her
passion to become a stylist and she attended the Richard the First Beauty School, in the late 80’s, where she excelled in all
aspects and achieved recognition as a licensed Cosmetologist. Mayshell excelled at her craft and became a top-notch, sought-
after hair stylist. In 1991, Mayshell married the love of her life, Harry Tucker. In 1994 she fulfilled her aspirations by opening her
first full-service hair salon which she named “The Grand Wave”. In 2015 Mayshell graduated from Suny Empire College with her
BS in Community and Human Services, and retired as a hair stylist while she pursued teaching. Mayshell continued her
education and received her NY State CASAC-T Certification in 2022. Mayshell was a strong advocate for education. Mayshell
was a joy to be around, she loved to sing and embraced all genres of music – anyone that has had the privilege of hearing
Mayshell sing will attest that she sang beautifully and effortlessly. Mayshell loved her “fur babies” Bully & Lovie. Mayshell was a
beautiful woman inside and out. She was a devoted, loving, mother, wife, sister, friend, and cousin. Family meant everything to
her. All she wanted before her transition was to be surrounded by family and loved ones.
Mayshell leaves behind her loving, devoted, selfless, amazing husband of 33 years, Harry Tucker; her mother Leola Singleton;
brother and sister-in-law Michael McKinney and Diana Robinson; sister Stephanie McKinney; two daughters: LaToya
Williams and Emerald Tucker; son, Jaquan Davis. Seven grandchildren: Oasis, Robert, Si’Ara, Brazil, Ne’Viyah and My’jae and
Emerald. Two sisters-in-law Nicole McCants, & Christina Williams, special friends, Brenda Richardson, Donna Konkolics & Ms.
Delta. Mayshell also leaves behind a host of loving and supportive aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Mayshell was
predeceased by her father Vincent Wood.
