Obituary of Pauline T. Sparling
Pauline (Polly) Sparling, a resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie since 1987, died at home on July 5 after a brief illness.
Born on April 2, 1957, to William and Mary Agnes Turnesa, Polly graduated from Manhattanville College in 1979 and enjoyed a career in magazine publishing before beginning work at Marist College, first as an adjunct professor and then as a student advisor in the School of Management. She served as president of the Spackenkill PTA when her children were in school and, more recently, on the board of the Metropolitan Golf Association’s Caddie Scholarship Fund, which had been established by her father.
A six-time marathoner, Polly had a passion for running and bringing people together through running. The “Posse” who ran with her every Saturday provided tremendous comfort and solace to Polly and her family during her final illness. She also enjoyed cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, cats and any activity that got her outdoors. Above all, she was devoted to family and friends.
Polly married Reed Sparling on August 27, 1983. Along with him, her survivors include children Evan (Kara) and Hilary, granddaughter Ayla, three siblings (Anne, Charles and Margaret) and their spouses, a niece and four nephews.
Polly’s family wishes to thank Hudson Valley Hospice for their tremendous support as well as home health aide Dalia Lopez, whose skill and cheerfulness brightened Polly’s last months.
Services will be private.
