Obituary of Karen J. Rugar

Karen J. Rugar, 79, of Poughkeepsie passed away on Friday, August 09, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones.

Karen was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, July 10, 1945.  She was the daughter of George and Alice VanZant Light, both of whom pre-deceased her.

Karen is a lifelong resident and was active in the Poughkeepsie community.  She graduated from Arlington High School and attended the Arlington Reformed Church, where she volunteered and worshiped her entire life.

Karen was a member of the USA Table Tennis Association and held rank as the number one senior woman player in the State of New York for several years, competing throughout the nation.  Karen also loved tennis, and in her younger years, softball.

On April 25th, 1965, at the Arlington Reformed Church, Karen married Richard J. Rugar, who pre-deceased her in 2014.

Karen is survived by her brother George Light, Jr., daughters and son-in-laws Pam and Nick LaMonica of Tennessee, Paula and Richard Michos of LaGrange, grandchildren Brianna LaMonica, Kayla LaMonica, Christine LaMonica, Evan West, Jacob West, great-grandson Timothy LaMonica and Luis Ashmead, as well as several in-laws, including Raymond Rugar, David and Shirley Rugar, sisters in law Christine Rugar, and Susan Diemer.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks to make donations to Hudson Valley Hospice in Honnor of Karen.

Calling Hours will be held Friday, August 16, 2024, from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie, New York 12603.

Funeral Services will be held at the Funeral Home at 10 am Saturday, August 17, 2024. Burial will follow at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
