Obituary of Arlene Becker

Arlene Dorothy Becker, aged 86, beloved wife, step-mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024 at her home in Poughkeepsie, surrounded by her family.

Born on June 26, 1938, she was a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie.

Arlene graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1956. She earned several accolades during her high school career, including Homemaker of the Year and queen of the senior prom.

Arlene began her career as a clerical worker at Prudential Insurance Company, working during her senior year of high school. She later served as an office manager at Triangle Electronics for many years before venturing into entrepreneurship with her own antique business, Becker’s Bygones. Arlene was deeply involved in the antiques trade and was known for her knowledgeable and passionate engagement with antiques.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Arlene was an enthusiastic collector; she accumulated an extensive collection of dolls and was an avid collector of Poughkeepsie memorabilia, including historic postcards and notable local mementos, evincing her love for, and connection to, her hometown. Travel was another thing Arlene enjoyed. She and her husband, Hugo, visited relatives in Germany several times, as well as France, Italy and England, along with Hawaii and countries throughout the Caribbean.

Arlene was renowned for her annual after-Christmas party which became a yearly reunion for her immediate and extended family. She had a special relationship with her nieces and nephews, and was adored by each of them. Her love for her family was exemplified by the devoted care she gave to her parents, her brother, Tony, and her husband, and the advice she gave to her stepson and brothers as they were growing up.

Arlene was a lover of animals. She always had pets, from cats and fish to exotic birds. She had a special affinity for Chihuahua dogs and always had one or several throughout her adult life.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Hugo; her mother, Eleanor; her father, Anthony; and her brother, Tony. She is survived by her stepson, Patrick; brothers, Bruce Germinaro (Carol Catanzaro) and Wayne Germinaro (Linda Ostraha); niece, Meghan (Leandro) Lacerda; nephew, Matthew Germinaro

(Caitlyn Tompkins); great-nephews and nieces, Lucas, Rebeckah, Andrew, and Emily Lacerda; and her furry children Sadie, Benji and Shadow.

A memorial service is planned at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery at 10 am on Saturday, November 23, 2024 where friends and family will gather to honor her memory and celebrate her life.
