Obituary of Kevin Wright
Kevin Wright, of Poughkeepsie, NY—the world’s best storyteller, handyman, and devoted family man—went home to be with Jesus on December 16, 2024, at the age of 68. He passed away in the home where he lived for more than 40 years.
Kevin was born on February 5, 1956, in Mt. Vernon, NY, to Everett and Mae Wright. He was one of seven siblings, including his sister, Sharon, and his five brothers: Wayne, Doug, Kenneth, Fred, and Keith. He spent many years in Yonkers and graduated from Saunders Trades and Technical High School. Kevin worked as a steamfitter at Johnson Controls for 19 years and later retired from the Wappingers Central School District. He married Wendy Lyon in 1986.
A master of ingenuity, Kevin could fix anything with a clever hack, draw like a professional sketch artist, and tend to his lawn as if it were a prized competition. He was also an avid Revolutionary War enthusiast. From participating in reenactments to crafting his own wool coats, tricorn hats, powder horns, and haversacks, his creations were nothing short of impressive.
Kevin faithfully served in the Royal Rangers program at Faith Assembly of God for many years, dedicating his time to mentoring and discipling young boys. Through teaching leadership skills and leading outdoor activities like camping, hiking, fishing, and survival training, he left a lasting impact on countless kids. His guidance and example shaped the next generation in ways that will not be forgotten.
The Jersey Shore was a beloved part of Kevin’s life. His love for the Shore began in the 1950s when he visited with his family. He frequented each year and would bring his wife and children to enjoy summers together. In recent years, he continued to visit his sister Sharon there, reminiscing of some of his most cherished memories. It was his favorite place.
He loved nothing more than a house full of family, with laughter echoing, stories flowing, and everyone feeling welcome. His favorite stories, of course, were about his siblings—tales told with such vivid detail and humor that you could almost hear their banter in the room. Kevin had a gift for making everyone feel like they belonged, whether they were family, colleagues, or neighbors who stopped by for a chat. His greatest joy came from seeing his loved ones happy and united.
Kevin is survived by his and Wendy’s children, Adam Wright and Ashley Jollay, and her husband, Nate, as well as his cherished grandchildren, Saint and Monroe Jollay.
We will gather together on Friday, December 27th at Doyle Funeral Home located at 371 Hooker Ave, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
