I worked for Peter 17+ years ago in Westchester while I was attending college. He was generous enough to allow me to work shifts that fit with my class schedule and he wished me well when I graduated. I never forgot that. So I was delighted when I heard he was opening a restaurant in Fishkill where I now live. Each time my family and I visited the Red Line we would be greeted with a handshake and a kiss. He would also come over to make sure everything was okay. Please accept our deepest sympathy. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Peter & Barbara Vetoulis posted a condolence
Thursday, September 11, 2014
We are grief-stricken by his loss. He was very firm with his employees, but he wasn't a despot. He didn't ask anything of his employees that he wouldn't do himself. He could frequently be seen picking up scraps of paper from under the tables, or clearing tables of dishes, etc. But come in late, or miss a day, and he was in his workers' faces. On a few occasions, drunken customers would lay hands on a waitress, and in each case, he'd grab the customer by the scruff of the neck and threaten to beat the snot out of them before throwing them out if it happened again. As you already know, upon hearing of Peter's demise, his servers cordoned off his normal parking space and converted it into a flowered shrine, with flowers and street chalk sentiments. Although we often heard staff grumble about what a hard nose Peter could be, there has been nary a dry eye in the house days after his death. Last Thursday, after hearing that my bladder cancer was "history", my son, Chris, and I went there, so I could celebrate. I bought him what he was drinking, some wine. He was so-o-o pleased that I was cancer free that he congratulated me over and over again. Barbara has since told me that while I was in treatment, he often quietly asked her how well I was really doing. Before Christmas, Barbara & I got the diner a bunch of tree ornaments for the tree he squeezed into the diner - glass grilled cheese sandwiches and sodas, and like that. This supposed tough guy sat at the counter, nearby as two of his workers opened the boxes and decorated the tree. He smiled like a little boy upon seeing each decoration. On a rare visit by his mother to the diner, Barbara introduced herself to her, and with the help of an unrelated Greek, used as a translator, sang praises of Peter and (present at the time) Peter's brother, Teddy. Both beamed like children. The mom was thrilled to hear this Irish girl tell her how wonderful and upright her boys were. We'll miss Peter the Greek. He worked himself too hard, but can now, finally, rest. He is at peace and in the palm of God's hand. Our hearts and our prayers are with his family. If there is anything we can do, please don't hesitate to call us. 265-2623

It is with profound sadness that I am writing this today. Peter was not only a business associate but a dear friend.
