Obituary of HELEN ALEXOPOULOS

Helen Megaris Alexopoulos passed away peacefully at Ferncliff nursing home 9/28/14. She was born January 12, 1923 in Aigio Greece to Anastasios and Andreana Megaris. Helen came to the Jamaica, Queens in 1951 and she married Thras Alexopoulos in March 1952, Thras predeceased her in 1974. In 1971 Helen and her husband moved to Poughkeepsie, New York. Helen is survived by two children, son Andrew Alexopoulos of Sherrill,NY and his companion Edwiges Pato, daughter; Vivian Alexopoulos of Poughkeepsie NY. and daughter in-law Cindy Alexopoulos. Helen is also survived by two granddaughters Katie Hamilton of Dayton Ohio and her husband Edward,their three children Aubrey and Austin Haney, Cameron Hamilton and Andrea Alexopoulos of Beijing China. Helen is survived by a sister Panora Athanasiadis of Yonkers NY, two brothers John Megaris and his wife Evelyn of Patmos Greece, and Tom Megaris of Long Island. She is predeceased by three brothers Constantine Megaris and Perry Megaris of Greece and Chris Megaris of Florida and a sister Tesvi Megaris of Greece. Helen is also survived by her sister-in-law's Adrian Megaris of Florida, Alexandra Megaris of Long Island, and Olga Megaris of Greece. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, she was exceptionally close to her nieces Foto Athanasiadis and Helen Allison. During Helen's life she worked on a farm in Greece. When she came to USA she worked at Bungalow Bar Ice Cream and she also had a hotdog wagon in Jamaica Queens and in Poughkeepsie at Spratt Park where she was known as Happy Helen's Hotdogs. Helen loved to sing and entertain people, she was a permanent fixture at the honey ball booth at the Kimisis Greek festival. Helen enjoyed gardening and cooking and she had a real zest for life. She would also often call Mark Bolger's radio show and do zany comic skits with him where he affectionately called her his "Greek grandmother". The family would like to thank the following, the staff at St. Michael's Home in Yonkers for taking care of her these past five years, the staff at Ferncliff Nursing Home for making her last few days comfortable and peaceful. Special thanks also go out to the following people Elenie Vlamis,Sophia Harrison, and Sue Gagas who gave her love and friendship, and to Anna Brady and Barbara Carbone whom she thought of as daughters.
