Obituary of William Chamuris
Bill Chamuris died peacefully at Vassar Brothers Hospital on Thursday from natural causes with family by his side. Bill was 88. He was born in Newburgh, son of Helen (Kehayias) and George V. Chamuris, brother to Estelle Dean of Millbrook and Anna Nicholas of Portland ME, all of whom predeceased him.
Bill devoted much of his life and career to public service. Among his many contributions, he served in the U.S. Army in the Philippine Islands during World War II, worked his way up from court crier to Director of the Dutchess County Probation Department, served as Chair and active member of the Dutchess County Republican Party, served as a lead official and race starter with the Dutchess County Track Officials and Coaches Association and Special Olympics, and was an active member of the Greek fraternal organization, AHEPA.
Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia Ann (Longobardi), sons George and partner Mary Jean (Mack) Rosini of Bloomsburg, PA, Christopher and wife Amy (Rivera) of Doylestown, PA, and Andreas (Andrew C.) of Woodside, NY; five bright and talented grandchildren, Kate of NYC, William and Brianna of Doylestown, PA, Elizabeth "Liz" and Marguerite Eisenhuth, her husband Jeffrey, of Bloomsburg, PA, their two children (Bill and Pat's great-grandchildren) Lucas and Annabel Lee, and by Marguerite and Liz's mother, Mary Elizabeth (Hogan) Chamuris of Bloomsburg. Bill is also survived by his sister's children Elaine and Thomas of Portland ME, Leon and family of Stratham, New Hampshire, their father James of Portland, and by Pat's extensive "Longobardi Clan."
Bill was the life of every party, famous for telling jokes. He was also well known for helping those in their hour of need, and beloved by generations of children who got a funny "squeak" whenever they pushed his nose. More bio information and family photos are online at www.WChamuris.tumblr.com.
Calling hours, dinner and refreshments will be offered on Monday, June 20, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM with a funeral service immediately following at St. Gregory's Orthodox Church, 1500 Route 376, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590, with dessert and coffee after the service. A 11am Funeral Service (Panikhida) at St. Gregory's will be held Tuesday June 21, 2016.
