Obituary of Father Joseph P. D'agostino
Father Joseph P. D'Agostino, a former resident of Poughkeepsie, died August 1, 2017 at the Teresian House in Albany. He was 100 and a priest for 74 years.
His most recent assignment was pastor of the Church of the Resurrection, Germantown. He retired in 1988 and moved to Poughkeepsie. From 1989 to 2010, he was in service as an associate priest at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Arlington.
Born in Schenectady on February 21, 1917, he was the son of Rufo and Annunziata (Buonomo) D'Agostino who predeceased him. He was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School in Schenectady, NY, and prepared for the priesthood at St. Charles College Seminary in Catonsville, Maryland and the Theological College at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 19, 1943 by Bishop Edmund F. Gibbons of Albany.
Father D’Agostino also served in the diocese of Albany at parishes in Gloversville, and Athens, NY. He was also a chaplain with the department of corrections and was ‘fluent’ in American Sign Language.
In addition to his parents, Father D’Agostino is predeceased by his brother, Carl, and three sisters, Helen O’Brien, Mary Gillette and Sister Elizabeth D’Agostino. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Father D’Agostino’s body will be received at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 5:00 PM. Visitation will be held in the church from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday August 4, 2017 11:30 AM at Holy Trinity Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY. Burial will be in St. Peters Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
