Shocked and deeply saddened to learn about Ian's premature departure, just a few days ago. Even more saddened that I did not know, and was not able to congratulate Ian on his extraordinary accomplishments. Very impressed by how much you achieved in such a short life! You certainly left an imprint Ian... not just academically, but on the many personal lives you touched. Very saddened to get this news....my sincere condolences to Mrs Paula Portelli and your sons Tylor and Cole.

GONE TOO SOON: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IAN PORTELLI, GRADUATED FROM FACULTY OF NURSING IN THE YEAR 2000, UNIVERSITY OF MALTA.
Born in Gozo part of Malta in the month of December 1978, we were classmates at the University of Malta. Ian was a hardworking, intelligent and very thoughtful person. Although, you were very close to a dear friend which all of us in the class knew but still, you could extend your hands of friendship to all of us. One of Ian’s best traits was that he loved to laugh and smile, liked wearing his ring and bracelet with different colours.
Soon you will be laid to rest but remember a common saying, God only takes the best. Everything happens for a reason. You were an awesome person with such an incredible personality. Although, the cause of death is still unknown to me hence writing this was a grieving process. If I knew you were going to die soon, I would have exchanged more emails with you, I would have visited New York as soon as you invited me last year. I didn’t know death would come too soon. The thought of never seeing you again brings tears to my eyes and even more so, that the news came to me as a surprise. However, I feel consoled because you have distinguished yourself in your academic pursuit. You have achieved more academically than anyone of us who graduated from Nursing in 2000. You pursued your studies as if you knew, you were leaving so soon.
You radiate warmth like a blazing fire. You are such an inspiration and encouragement to those who come in contact with you. Go in peace my dear friend. You shine like a sparkling crystal and if someone feels angry, you can make him grin. You had such amazing qualities. You are a loving track from a beautiful song. I do not want to say “Goodbye” because your spirit lives on. I recall with outstanding clarity how we all as a class used to hitchhike after every semester exams from Rabat to Mriehel, Mjar to Mellieha, but you would be the one to tap me from the back and cracked jokes as we walked along. Also, I remember clearly the day you engaged me in a family discussions of how many siblings I have and you told me about your only sister and another brother if I remember clearly.
Today, you have left everybody in a silent unwilling agony, your wife and children, parents, brother and sister, and to those of us who applaud your progress. Go in peace. I know that if death was a research exam, you could have passed it and still be alive.
I know you are at peace where you are, when you walk through the gates of heaven, may the angel of the LORD take you by the hand and bring you to your creator. Rest in peace my dear friend. Malta has lost an illustrious son, the university you were lecturing has lost a gem and could not hold their tears. The Nursing graduates of the year 2000 are still in utterly shock and amazement. You are dear to everyone of us. Rest in peace, till we meet to part no more.
Adieu

My heart aches with pain after learning of your passing. I had the pleasure of working with you and the wonderful Trauma team you formed at Vassar Hospital. In the length of time we worked together you always pushed your team and me to do better not just for the patients but even for ourselves. I remembered telling you I was moving to GA and you told me to remember all that I learned and apply that to what i already knew and to do great works in my new state. You encouraged me to go to school and I didnt at time but I wish I could text or call you now and say "HEY, DR. IAN, guess who is on their way to NURSING SCHOOL." I am thankful to have had the pleasure to work with you and learn from you.
When I graduate I will dedicate my Degree to you along with my son and dad who have passed on as well.
To Mrs. Paula, Ian always made sure he stated he had you and your children as his greatest support system. I send my prayers to you.
"May the peace of God and his angels encamp around you and lift you up when you feel down. May the Holy Spirit comfort you and may you keep the loving and memorable moments of Dr. Ian Portelli alive and forever in your hearts."
Be blessed and encouragedd

I was not surprised that you would be the first in our group to leave this tiny but beautiful island (and what a splash you made!) But who could imagine you were to be the first one to leave this world, too.
Farewell, dear course mate, colleague and friend. Thank you for your friendship, academic endeavours and contagious smile. I will treasure out memories forever.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends in Malta and New York, especially to Paula, Anita and George and to his parents and kids, whom, unfortunately I never met.You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Today is a sad day. I could never imagine to have to say good bye to Ian, the very first friend that I made in this country. Ian was like the older brother that I never had and I always looked at him as an example.
I had the honor to work with Ian at NYU when I first came in the US and the fortune to get to know him at a deeper and personal level over they years. We become very good friends and, although we lived relatively far way, we continued to see each other on a regular base and established our traditional rock concert hang-out or fun weekends with our families.
My wife and I are deeply shocked, our hearts are heavy. We offer our most sincere condolences to Paula and the kids.
Ian will be very much missed among us until the day we meet again.

I am so sorry to be writing this condolence. I worked with Ian at Vassar for a number of years and became a friend while taking a class with him over a 10 month period of time. I can honestly say that my heart aches for the loss of this wonderful man. Ian always approached all challenges with a smile. He was always a shining star and will be sorely missed by all. My prayers are with your wife and sons as they go through these hard times. I know you will always keep a watch from above over your family and friends. Rest in peace my friend. You will always be remembered as one of the "good" ones.

I know, in the depth of my heart, that Ian (and his beautiful wife Paula and amazing little boys) were brought into our lives for a reason.
Ian was a determined, accomplished and distingushed man, both inside and outside of all the hospital doors he worked in.
He inspired every person he came into contact with, whether it was with a few motivational words, reassuring thoughts or just his gentle "I know what you're thinking" smile.
We are so lucky to have met him and have him in our lives, although for a short time, he was one of the few GREAT ones.
Rest in Peace Ian. May God continue to protect Paula and the boys.

Words cannot Express my sadness in your passing. They say people come into our lives for a reason. You and your team came into my life on june 22, 2016 when my daughter grace was sent to your trauma center. You and your team were responsible for saving her life. For that alone I am forever indebted to you. From that you were instrumental in starting me in my nursing career (think I am thankful for that lol). You didnt know me but you believed I had what it takes to be a great nurse and helped me get my job. All because of my daughters accident. These are all things I will forever keep with me. Those who had the privilege of knowing you are forever affected. Rest in peace Ian. May God watch over and protect your family.

You were always so responsive, always so available even when you were doing doubles at Vassar AND always with a smile! During my struggle with my dad's illness and then his passing, you remained in contact with me and offered kind words. That is who you are and that is how I shall always remember you. Rest in peace my dear colleague and friend. Shine your brightness on your family and friends who are missing you today and always. My deepest condolences to your wife and children. Bye Ian. Dear Ian,
I wanted to thank you for the last two years but never came around to do it. Two summers ago we were locked out of our house. I was sick and was out of mind. My wife was going frantic. You came around with your kid on your shoulder. Even though you could not open any of the doors but your confidence that it would pass was inspiring. Your compassion and your enthusiasm touched both me and my wife very deeply. We still talk about how hopeless and helpless we felt and how optimistic, enthusiastic and full of life you were at that time.
May you Rest In Peace and may god bless your family.
