My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Jim.
I met Jim when he arrived in my office in Bromont & announced that he was the new liaison with Fishskill & Bromont. He then pulled out a cigar; before I could say anything , with a twinkle in his eye, he said "don't worry, I don't smoke, I just chew it."
That was the start of a friendship both Professional & Personal. He was instrumental in helping improving quality, trimming costs & cutting thru red tape. A few years later when he retired from IBM, Bromont quickly decided to hire him as a consultant, where he continued to share his expertise & also mentor many of our junior engineers.
I will miss you Dank, May you Rest in Peace.

My deepest condolences to Jim’s family – Jim was a tremendous, no-nonsense engineer who was the go-to person IBM could always count on to get the job done. More importantly, Dank was a great mentor, confident, and friend to so many. I remember flying to Vimercate, Italy with Jim…like so many other times, Jim was called into solving a manufacturing line-down problem and I tagged along as the ‘newbie’. When we got to the car rental, I think they had seen us as the Americans and tried to rent us some low-end Fiat automatic (I’m sure the only one available in 100 miles). By the time Jim got done with them, we had a 6 speed Ferrari GT that I was scared to shift out of 2nd gear! But what a great time we had and outstanding work accomplished. I will always remember Dank with great fondness - here's a photo of many IBM'rs / retirees (Jim's backside to us) enjoying lunch and conversation together back in October 2016 ....rest in peace my friend.

Posting on behalf of an IBM colleague...
I was heartbroken when I heard the sad news this morning. I remember all those great times I had with Jim as we travelled across the country looking for suppliers and equipments. All our conversations while sharing a good Chardonnay. I learned a lot from him professionally, of course, but even more humanely. I will always be grateful to him.
Please offer my deepest condolences to his loved ones. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.
Kind regards,

My deepest condolences to Jim's family and friends. Jim became a mentor to me early in my career at IBM (1991 or so). I had no idea what to make of him at first, but Dank was alright and then some! Definitely 'old school' in that he was no-nonsense when it came to the task at hand. But he was smart, talented, well-respected by all who knew him -and funny as hell. After he retired, I would occasionally visit Jim at his house in Milbrook on the way to the rail trail in Amenia. Although our visits were unannounced, Jim was always happy to see me and invited me in. We would reminisce, or he would show me his latest toys - mainly farm/garden/fishing stuff. :) Jim would sometimes join the 'Retirees and Wannabees" lunches we would hold in East Fishkill every fall. Ironically, I had been thinking alot about Jim recently, in the wake of the passing of another one of our department-mates - Keith O'Neil. I wish I had followed my instinct and reached out to him while I could. Rest in Peace, my old friend.

My condolences to the family and his close friends. It is very sad to learn that Jim has left us. I did not have the opportunity to see him recently but he left us a long lasting impression, it was a great experience to have him as a coach He was a generous soul , seemed fearless and gave us the drive to be forward thinking and ambitious in our choices.
A man of character and life of the party, he was great fun to have around, he has a special place in our hearts.

I am so sorry to read of Jim's passing and send my condolences to the entire Dankelman family. I was fortunate to work with Jim (or Dankelman, as we usually called him) for many years through the end of his career in Fishkill and throughout his travels to work in Bromont, Canada. I learned so much from him. Despite his sometimes gruff exterior, those who knew him saw through to his generous heart and kind spirit. I enjoyed keeping in touch with him during his retirement with group lunches and whenever a concert would bring us to the green in Millbrook. He will be missed by so many of the extended IBM family and the Millbrook community. RIP Danks <3
