Obituary of John T. Montross

John T. Montross, a loving husband, father and community volunteer passed away on June 22, 2024 at the age of 76. He was born on August 26, 1947 in Poughkeepsie, New York to John T. and Ruth (Roe) Montross and was a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie.  He was a devoted husband for 55 years to his wife Joanne (Pennes) Montross.

John joined the Rochdale Firehouse in 1983 as a volunteer firefighter.  He was dedicated to the community, donating countless hours over the years protecting local residents.  John also gave back to community working and organizing firehouse sponsored events; Pancake Breakfasts, Casino Nights, Holiday Caroling and various other events.  He became a lifetime member and continued to serve in administrative capacities and was the sitting President of the Rochdale Fire Department in the Arlington Fire District.  

John was a graduate of Arlington High School, Class of 1966. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a Diesel Mechanic that retired from H.O. Penn in 2007, and a member of the Poughkeepsie Elks 275. John’s life was fulfilled by doting on his family, serving his community and completing a never-ending list of projects.

John is survived by his wife, Joanne; son and daughter-in-law JPand Tamar, son and girlfriend Brian and Nicole, grandchildren Kailee, Noah, Meralia, Caleb, brother-in-law John Pennes and his wife Pat, and extended family.  A Celebration of John's life will take place from 4-8 PM on July 3, 2024, at the Poughkeepsie Elks Lodge 275, 29 Overocker Road Poughkeepsie, NY.  Interment will take place in St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local charity of your choice.
