Memories of Tineke (Tina)
From about 6-7 years old, we were close friends.
We could play with dolls for a very long time.
We had a similar doll, with the same dresses.
In summer, when the cows from the farm went out
into the meadows, we could play in the
cleanend stables. We made then there
our own “houses” in the stables and could then spend hours
playing together, as well as with other girls. We
also had a lot of imagination. Sometimes we played with
the little geeses from the goose board.
When we were 14-15 years old I went to dance lessons,
but Tineke didn't go with us, because a few weeks later
she was going to emigrate to America with her parents.
I was very sorry about that.
We always kept in touch, first by letter, later by e-mail.
My husband and I went to America twice and stayed
with them. Jim and Tina regularly came to Fryslân,
an area they loved very much and visited us each
time as well.

Forty years ago I was involved in a backpacking class hiking 75.80 miles on the Appalachian Trail. At the end of the trip, families of the participants would come to pick up their weary hikers.
This is when I first met Tina. I was instantly drawn to her outgoing and uplifting personality and she can be very funny. Joking with us why we spent time dealing with the heat, drudgery on the trail, mosquitoes, and black flies where instead we should be in the pool at a fancy hotel. A point well taken.
Rest in peace Tina.

To all of Tina's family,
A few months ago Tina and I had a long conversation about visiting the Netherlands. Tina's love of her home country was strong and her connection to her family across the ocean held over all this time and distance. I loved hearing her explain things to me about the Dutch culture and country.
She was smart and beautiful on the inside and out. Her love of family and community showed in everything she did.
My heart goes out to Jim, Evan, Jim and the rest of the family.
